{"id":3138,"date":"2020-05-16T13:15:51","date_gmt":"2020-05-16T12:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/?p=3138"},"modified":"2020-05-16T13:15:51","modified_gmt":"2020-05-16T12:15:51","slug":"the-galilean-moons","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/?p=3138","title":{"rendered":"The Galilean Moons"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Worried about Corona Virus?&nbsp; Desperate for a summer holiday?&nbsp; Looking for somewhere off the beaten track, not over-run by tourists and Corona free?<\/p>\n<p>An article on the Astrobites website looks at the possibility of the Galilean moons as potential possibilities.<\/p>\n<p>I have posted the astrobites article on the \u201cgeneral Items\u201d page ( <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/?page_id=1833\">HERE<\/a> <\/strong>) and the address for the actual article is<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/astrobites.org\/2020\/05\/11\/viability-of-living-on-the-galilean-moons\/\">HERE<\/a>, &nbsp;<\/strong>but in summary the best bet looks like Callisto.<br \/>\n<strong>Io&nbsp; :<\/strong>&nbsp; the closest to Jupiter, is the most geologically active of the moons due to the tidal forces from the planet.&nbsp; There are strong enough to cause solid tides where the the surface bulges 100m or so a day.&nbsp; It is also a bit close for the radiation from Jupiter, some 4.5 million times that on earth.<br \/>\n<strong>Europa&nbsp; :<\/strong>&nbsp; Although not covered by the astrobites article Europa doesn\u2019t really appeal as a holiday destination.&nbsp; Like our moon one side is always facing Jupiter.&nbsp; It is the smallest of the 4 moons and is comprised of a smooth surface, thought to be ice, overlying an ocean with a iron core.&nbsp; It is the smallest, thus the lowest gravity, subject to strong tidal forces and prone to the eruption of water spouts over 100 miles high and high radiation from Jupiter.<br \/>\n<strong>Ganymede&nbsp; :<\/strong>&nbsp; It does have an internal magnetic field, but only a small fraction of the Earth\u2019s, so radiation is definitely still a problem and you would have to stay under ground.&nbsp; Shame really as the sight of Jupiter in the sky, 36 times larger than our moon and amazing aurora, must be something to behold.<br \/>\n<strong>Callisto&nbsp; :<\/strong>&nbsp; the furthest of the Galilean moons for Jupiter.&nbsp; This results in a radiation level only 12 times that on Earth, probably fine for a 2 week holiday.&nbsp; There is also plenty of water on the moon so showers and hand washing should be OK.<\/p>\n<p>The other downside is, of course, getting there.&nbsp; No charter flights at the moment and it did take NASA\u2019s Juno probe 5 years to get there!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gll_moons1.en_-1.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3140\" src=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/gll_moons1.en_-1.gif\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"236\"><\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-3141\" src=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes.png 512w, http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes-300x114.png 300w, http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes-150x57.png 150w, http:\/\/abergavennyas.org.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Galilean-Moons-sizes-400x152.png 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 512px) 100vw, 512px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Worried about Corona Virus?&nbsp; Desperate for a summer holiday?&nbsp; Looking for somewhere off the beaten track, not over-run by tourists and Corona free?
